WHITE LETTER DAY
Had a lie in this morning as the forecast was quite gloomy, however when releasing last nights moths the sun came out and it was very warm.Three times this summer I have been to the elm tree copse at Temple Ewell without success so a fourth was not full of great expectation. After half an hour of watching lots of butterflies nectaring on the bramble, notably marbled white, meadow brown, gatekeeper, ringlet, chalk hill blue, comma, and large and small skippers there was my quarry,a White Letter Hairstreak come down from the canopy to feed, patience repaid once again.Highlight of the moth trap was a superb swallowtail moth, well sitting here awaiting the promised deluge the sun is out again, time for a garden safari.

Phil ,
ReplyDeleteGood to meet you yesterday at Dene Wood .
Hope the DGFs showed better than the PEs.
Phil,
ReplyDeleteI also tried the elm copse without success - plenty of other butterflies to see of course, but where did you get the hairstreak? The elms seem to be in the middle of the length of hedgerow.
