AUGUST FLY THEY MUST

Another month of indifferent summer weather so  had to make the most of the few fine days.Autumn is upon us and the birds are starting their long southerly migration to their wintering grounds. The last of Kents butterflies the Silver Spotted Skipper has its day this month and second generations of others begin to show.

CORN BUNTINGS have fared quite well in the new weedy fields on the cliffs.

TURNSTONE poking about in the bladderwrackat Oare still sporting some breeding plumage.

There has been an influx of WRYNECKS over the last couple of weeks, this one is one of two birds at the old rifle range at Abbotscliffe, not the best pictures I`m afraid, when it popped up it was against the light and I hadn`t changed my camera settings from the dull conditions earlier in the day.

A member of the woodpecker family that formerly bred in Kent
now just a passage migrant
It took me forty years to see my first Wryneck for one reason or another.
It gets its name from its ability to move its neck into abnormal positions.

Another passage migrant mostly seen in Autumn is the WHINCHAT,it can be an awkward customer to photograph  as most are quite wary.
